A Kenmore that came with your new house in Thompson Place or on Tumwater Hill was built by another company, and knowing which speeds the repair.

Kenmore never had factories of its own. The name began as a department-store label, and other manufacturers built the machines to order, which is why two Kenmores on the same street can have little in common inside. For decades Whirlpool built most Kenmore washers and dryers, along with many dishwashers. Frigidaire, under Electrolux, built many of the refrigerators, freezers and ranges, and LG built many later front-loaders and refrigerators. The model tag tells the story: the digits before the dot in a Kenmore model number point to the company that made it. In Olympia, where nearly half the homes predate 1980, and in 1960s Lacey neighborhoods like Tanglewilde, a Kenmore in the garage may have outlasted an owner or two.
Our company is independent of Kenmore and every builder behind it, so if a newer Kenmore still carries its warranty, use that coverage before booking us. Otherwise, a picture of the model tag sent to our scheduling desk helps our technicians most. Once we know the maker behind it, the technician can bring parts that fit: a Whirlpool-built dryer takes the same rollers and thermal fuse as its Whirlpool cousin, and an LG-built front-loader shares its pump and door boot with LG models. At the house we listen, test with a meter and thermometer, and only then walk you through the worn part and the single price we write for it. A new owner also gets the care note, often the first real instructions that machine has come with.
Whirlpool-built Kenmore top-loaders from the direct-drive years still turn up in garages, and they tend to need agitator dogs, a motor coupling or a lid switch. Later front-loaders came from Whirlpool or LG depending on the year, so we match door boots, pumps and bearings to the tag. Musty door boots in damp laundry rooms are the usual front-load complaint.
The classic Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryer is one of the easiest machines to keep going: belt, rollers, idler pulley, heater element and thermal fuse all come out through the top or front with ordinary tools. LG-built Kenmores differ inside, and gas models from either maker need the igniter and valve coils tested. We check the vent run on every call.
Kenmore refrigerators came from Frigidaire, Whirlpool and LG over the years, depending on style and decade. Warm fresh-food sections usually mean frost on the evaporator or a failed fan, whoever built the unit. Garage units in Tumwater and Lacey add dusty condenser coils and cold-weather quirks, and door gaskets on older models harden and leak. We read the tag, then the thermometer.
Because the builder varies, a Kenmore ice maker may be a Whirlpool-style module in the freezer or an LG-style unit in the fresh-food door. The water side works the same either way: an inlet valve with a screen that catches well sediment, a fill tube that can freeze, and a filter that needs changing. We test those before replacing any module.
Many Kenmore ranges came from Frigidaire, so their igniters, bake elements, oven sensors and surface element switches often match Frigidaire parts of the same era. Gas models get a manometer reading on the supply; electric models get meter tests on each element and switch. A self-clean that ends with the door stuck locked points us to the latch assembly.
Many Kenmore dishwashers came from Whirlpool and others from Frigidaire, so the inside might hold a chopper assembly, a removable filter or both. Standing water, a door that refuses to latch and a wash that never warms are the usual calls. Olympia owners on soft city water can often cut their detergent dose and see clearer glasses within a week.
| Machine | Common fault | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Kenmore top-loader, Whirlpool-built | Motor runs, agitator barely moves | Agitator dogs, motor coupling, transmission |
| Kenmore front-load washer | Slow drain and a musty boot | Drain pump, pump filter, door boot |
| Kenmore electric dryer | Squeals, then stops heating | Idler pulley, drum rollers, thermal fuse, heater element |
| Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator | Freezer fine, upper section warming | Evaporator frost, evaporator fan, defrost circuit |
| Kenmore refrigerator ice maker | Small, hollow cubes | Water pressure, inlet valve screen, filter |
| Kenmore gas range | Long delay before the oven burner catches | Igniter, oven safety valve, supply pressure |
A family settling into a Westside Olympia rambler finds that the Kenmore washer left behind will fill but not spin. When they book, our desk locks in an arrival window and asks them to snap the tag with a phone. The technician hears what they have seen so far, then runs a drain test and meters the lid switch and motor circuit. Afterward they hear, without jargon, what gave out, and they see one price on paper. Whether you approve or not, the visit is $99: inside the repair price if you proceed, the only charge if you do not. Our vans stock parts for Whirlpool-built Kenmores, and a care note explains the machine to its new owners.
Whoever built your Kenmore, we will find out, fix what failed and write you a care note for the machine you actually have.
Request serviceFind the model tag, usually inside the door or lid, on the door frame, or on the back. The Kenmore model number has a group of digits, then a dot, then more digits. The first group points to the builder. Send our scheduling desk a photo and we will tell you who made it and what that means for parts.
Usually. Because Kenmore washers were built by Whirlpool, LG and others, most of their parts are the same ones those makers used in their own machines, and many are still made. A few older control and timer parts have gone out of production. Our technician checks availability before giving you a written price, so there are no surprises halfway through.
Let it run a day or two, then check it with a thermometer. If both sections hold temperature, unplug it to clean the condenser coil, check the door gaskets and change the water filter; it may serve for years. If it runs constantly, frosts up or warms, our technician tests it and tells you whether the problem is a modest part or the sealed system.
Hollow or shrunken cubes usually mean too little water reaches the mold. A filter past its change date, low household water pressure, or an inlet valve screen clogged with sediment from a private well are the common causes. Change the filter first. Cubes that stay small after that lead our technician to measure household pressure, meter the inlet valve and look inside the fill tube, where a plug of ice can form.
Yes. Elite was Kenmore’s top line, and like the rest, it was built by other companies, including Whirlpool and LG, depending on the machine and year. That means an Elite washer or refrigerator often shares parts with its maker’s own models. Our technicians read the tag, test the failed system and give you one written price, as with any Kenmore.
Send the model and what it is doing. $99 to diagnose, absorbed into the quote if you go ahead.
